I need some help! My teacher and I decided to ditch the Bach Inventions for a while because they were boring me...he assigned a Sarabande, which I believe is from the French Suites, but neither of us could remember which one! I don't have a scanner handy, but in the first measure the LH plays 3 D octaves in quarter notes, and the RH ascends with: A major third (F and A), another (G and B), then still upwards with an A, C♯, and a D. Key is D minor. Thanks!

It just happened to be my gift selection from piano street. I was going to break my Bach aversion with the Allemande. (not that I don't like Bach, I just fear him.)

My teacher and I decided to ditch the Bach Inventions for a while because they were boring me...[ H, my first exposure to Bach was the inventions and I too found them boring and avoided Bach for decades. Then I discovered Well Tempered Clavier - NOT boring. Give them a try!

First, he wanted me to try this sarabande though, since it's barely half a page (it has repeats, of course). He told me that the problem with the Inventions (the two parters anyway) is that the requirement to have a semblance of full harmony despite only two voices sounding at any one time results in figurations that can be rather awkward.

There's a great deal of wealth in both the inventions and the sinfonias and to play them all musically is always a challenge.

Bach has no requirement for a full harmony. That's one of the silliest things I've heard. The 2-part are all amazing pieces. You and your teacher obviously fail to understand them - remember they are about how to compose. The 3-part are another matter altogether - I find them a bit too much like an exercise.

He's as entitled to his opinion as you are; incidentally he is a professional composer as well as a pianist (no he isn't one of those avant-garde types). Didn't say they weren't great pieces; they just bore me unfortunately.
