I picked Bruckner.
What about you?

I thought it was a no-brainer, but I suppose I was wrong. I love Bruckner very much, but I would not rate his symphonies in a cumulative sense over Beethoven.
Bruckner's symphonies have -IMHO- a very personal integrity to them which are miles away from the hysterical and self-absorbed neurosis of many of the Mahler symphonies. A fine performance of, say, the Bruckner 3rd, 5th or 7th is a truly human experience, somehow one has shared the composer's journey.
For all that, the Elgar 2nd encompasses the entire gamut of humanity. From that confident opening, and on to the end wherein the main theme is transfigured, we have come light years away from the opening notes. It is a very remarkable work, the landscape of a precious soul.

Beethoven for me. But I must note that I enjoy Elgar's orchestral writing as much as argerichfan. Quite a special experience.

A tough choice between two contenders! ;D But, in the end, I had to give Beethoven the nod over Brahms.

Good grief, a hard question. I picked Beethoven... but there are so many that I enjoy.

Do any of these polls have poll results? I know most everyone has commented so far and Beethoven seems to have the lead, but eventually....

Yeah, there's something not making the polls display right. Going to look into it.
