How is vibrato achieved? Is it by varying the pressure of the hammer on the string? Or is there some way to induce a lateral movement in the hammer from the keyboard?

It's not a hammer, it's a tangent. Made of brass, it presses against the string. They stick up from the end of the key lever: If you vary the pressure you get a vibrato - on clavichord it's called bebung.

I personally have never used bebung. I do love the intimate connection of the fingers to the strings though, and I find the more I play clavichord, the more it makes other keyboard instruments so much easier to play.

I love playing with bebung. That's one of the things that made me fall in love with this instrument. Before I knew about the clavichord I assumed it would be impossible without some sort of really fancy mechanical contrivance to produce a vibrato with a keyboard instrument. The clavichord almost seems like the "original" keyboard instrument, and is still one of the best. I guess one of those old modal key operated organs was actually the original keyboard instrument, though

btw, that piece you linked, the croft.mp3? I've heard that before, it's gorgeous. Do you know of where I could find a free pdf of it perhaps? I'm dying to play it.

Awesome, thank you! I think I may try reading this at my clavichord this evening!
