Thanks argerichfan for a fantastic idea to do sticky threads on the great pianists!

I've REALLY been enjoying the YouTube video with Rostropovich conducting Prokofiev 3.

Wonderful! Rostropovich isn't just a great cellist (his rendition of Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante is second to none), but if you can believe it, one of the greatest Prokofiev conductors along with the likes of Rozhdestvensky, Gergiev, Jarvi, Weller, and Kitajenko. And of course, Prok 3 is one of Argerich's specialties.
Argerichfan, do you prefer her earlier recording with Abbado or the later one with Dutoit? I've always preferred the latter, which really is a bit strange, considering how much praise the former has had heaped upon it...

I've always preferred the latter, which really is a bit strange, considering how much praise the former has had heaped upon it... Indeed, and Rostropovich was also a very great accompanist- therefore an immensely accomplished pianist. Older friends of mine report how he superbly played for his wife, Galina Vishnevskaya. (She is a bit of an acquired taste, but I love her.) As for Prokofiev 3, the later recording is of course very fine -how could it not be?- but I confess that some of the spontaneity of the earlier recording has gone amiss. Like Kissin (though we are comparing a very talented pygmy to a Goddess), Argerich can be maddeningly inconsistent in concert. Her studio recording of the Liszt Eb is far superior to her live performances wherein she gets rather consumed by her own virtuosity. She had one shot at Strauss's Burleske and it's a TOTAL knockout. Reportedly she found it difficult, though she makes not one mistake in the well known video with Abbado. I've read through this very awkwardly written piece, and hats off to those who can make a meal of it.

After Martha's brilliant, Grammy winning recording of Cinderella with Pletnev, I wonder what she is thinking now.
