This thread is devoted to the discussion of one of the most enigmatic and eccentric pianists in history, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Six things you may or may not have known about Michelangeli: - He loved his Ferrari almost as much as his piano.
- He was a great connoisseur of piano mechanics and insisted that any instrument he touched were in perfect condition.
- His wife was his secretary.
- Argerich, Moravec, and Pollini were among his many pupils.
- He was hailed "a new Liszt" by Alfred Cortot.
- Sviatoslav Richter considered Michelangeli one of his only equals.
- He possessed one of the most flawless techniques of all time.

Argerich may have been his pupil, but she reported that he told to go and become "a secretary or something like that." Not very supportive of a pupil, IMO. I think he was actually envious of her abilities. She brought him a finished Gaspard de la Nuit after only a week, and later is said to have commented, "I didn't know it was supposed to be difficult."

According to Argerich, she had very few lessons with Michelangeli, and I believe the story about Gaspard took place when she was studying with Friedrich Gulda.

It is interesting to note too that of the three pianists mentioned, Argerich is the one that sounds the least like the maestro, and by far.
