I'm just getting back into playing the Goldberg Variations (never got past the first three) and have been listening to some recordings for inspiration. Just wondering what people's favorites are? right now my favorite is a recording by Vladimir Feltsman.

Hmmm, the only one I have listened to all the way through is Glenn Gould's. I'm on a Bach kick these days, so perhaps I should check out some others.

I'm not sure I have a recording that I'd call my favorite for the Goldbergs. There are variations I like by different pianists, but Angela Hewitt's recording comes the closest to being an absolute for me. Tureck, and Schiff also figure heavily into the equation.

I have Hewitt's hyperion recording of the Toccatas. It's wonderful.

I have Hewitt's hyperion recording of the Toccatas. It's wonderful. I agree. I have all of her Bach recordings and every one of them are superb in my opinion. Hyperion, by the way, has gathered all of her Bach recordings and turned them into a 15 cd box set due for release in September.

I go for the Simone Dinnerstein Goldbergs which came out three or four years ago.

Anyone prefer the harpsichord here? I have the last of Gustav Leonhardt's recordings and find it surprisingly dry and pedantic. And this is coming from someone who actually enjoys this instrument. And worships Bach.

And worships Bach. I can't say I "prefer" the harpsichord, but do love the instrument. I haven't heard all of Leonhardt's recordings of the Goldbergs (I think he made three?), but I have heard similar reactions to his last recording.

While I can't pick a favorite Goldberg recording, I can pick one of my least favorites. I have detested all things Glenn Gould since I first heard him.
